I love her outfit — the slit in her skirt is sexy, the bare waist above those hips is that which one should not discuss on a family family friendly digitalart board, the jewels (rubies?) adorning her belt add a nice shade of red that accentuates and bridges the red of skirt and her her — and her hair color (as well as the hair itself) is nothing less than wunderbar.

But there's something off. It's as if she's an eleven and female Keith Richards before he cleaned himself up. Any one or two of these small things would escape my attention or add to her unique appearance in isolation, but, in sum, they make her look as if she's been at the black lotus before going on stage: I can tell, even without seeing her feet, how they must be planted, but with the knees at different levels, a wobbliness is suggested that makes her look as if she's struggling to stand; the tilt of her head looks, in this context, like the head of a drunk that he or she is struggling to keep on, rather than letting it fall limply aside; her eyes, in isolation, are fine (and beautiful), but combined with the head's tilt, she looks cross-eyed†; the manner in which her mouth is open and her lips are curved is an imaginative and creative use of both, but, combined with everything else, it makes look unbalanced (mentally and pictorially, both).

What I see — and remember, my training is far afield from the visual arts — is an image that seems to be trying to do too many unique things with its subject at once. The busier she becomes, the more discombobulated this viewer becomes when I try to take it all in, and I project my disorientation onto her.

This piece is neither the dregs of the dA catalogue nor is it the dregs of your gallery (your gallery has no dregs). I also want to make sure you know that you are one of the half dozen artists whose work I most admire and enjoy; the majority of it leaves me in utter awe. I am always wary of providing critical feedback. I did it for a living for many years and it was my job to be critical, and, sometimes, brutally so. What I like about dA is that there is so much good work that I can focus on that which is great rather than the dregs (which, again, this is not). It's also a lot easier for a critic to point out negative things that it is for her or him to explain what is good about a piece, and I enjoy working to better my meagre skills at positive feedback.

All of that said, I do not think that this piece is "bad." I have come back to it a number of times to try to find why it feels off to me since you posted it and, since no one else has chimed in, I thought that I might as well toss my two cents (and no sense) into the æther.

yours,
Matthew
